Holiday Madness

by CBybee

Unless you live under a rock, and I don’t see anyone around who looks like Patrick Star, you know the holidays are upon us. Is it me, or do they seem to come around faster every year? Used to be you didn’t see Halloween decorations in the stores until after the Back to School supplies were gone. Of course, that was when kids went back to school in the fall – my kids are back in mid August. Doesn’t that just suck? But that’s for a different blog…

Yep, Halloween had it’s month, then Thanksgiving took over until Black Friday. Used to be, the malls opened up only to a crew of decorators to hang decorations on Thanksgiving night. Not anymore. Now the malls open up to shoppers. Gotta start going into the black as early as possible. Every year you hear about someone being trampled to save a few dollars on a gift they can’t afford even at the discounted price. *shakes head*

If there is one good byproduct of our shitty economy, it’s that people have cut back. They can’t afford over buy a bunch of garbage that will be shoved in the back of a closet and forgotten about in a few months. I’m not going all Ebenezer on you. Christmas time is my most favorite time of the year. I love the crisp air, the scent of pine, and the beautiful lights twinkling. It’s a time of hope, of laughter… and with any luck, family harmony.

My most favorite memory growing up was when my little sister and I took a wagon out in the forest surrounding our home to cut down a Christmas tree. We seriously couldn’t afford one and we thought it would surprise our mom. That stupid tree had Charlie Brown written all over it. Holes in the middle, leaning to one side… I can’t tell you what I got that year from Santa, but I remember that tree.

We took two pictures of that tree with my sister and I in front of it. A couple of years later, I lost my sister. She was nine. In her casket is a picture of her and I and that silly tree.

Don’t forget what this time of year really means.

Happy Holidays

Going Rogue ~ Catherine’s thoughts on self publishing

by CBybee

Ahhh, the word rogue means so many things. In historical romance rogue is a descriptive word used to let the reader know that the hero in the book is breaking the trend. He’s above or outside of society norm. In futuristic romance rogue can mean criminal or maybe ‘riding the line’ of being a criminal bad boy. Past or present, rogue brings to mind the image of someone stepping outside the box.
