Festival People

by Cadence Denton

Here in Louisiana, the end of April means one thing: The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Lucky ticket holders can be certain they will be treated to great food, sunny weather (usually), crafts, and stellar entertainment including, but not limited to, the music. That’s right. Festivals mean…drumroll, please… Festival People. You know the ones, folks who march to a different drummer, who embrace an inner need to shine. They are the ones standing out in the crowd, that grab everyone’s attention particularly in the mile long line of celebrants waiting their turn in the odiferous Port ‘o Johns.

April Fool!

by Cadence Denton

I was up most of the night with a sick headache.  Please forgive me for this brief post!

Loafer , layabout, slacker, lazybones – all words that define my actions this morning. I’ll give you another: slugabed.

Words are what writers do.  They are the tools of the trade, of our trade.

I have a friend whose husband is a contractor. She has stated that her husband spends a fortune on tools, usually to replace them because they sprout legs and walk off the jobsite. Words are like that. Many of us became writers because we had a message to tell. Many, because we had stories inside us that had to come out, and some of us because we had a love for the way words can be manipulated and used in new, exciting ways.  I have always admired a well-turned phrase.

I’ll read it over and over, studying it, all the while planning to create my own. How about unexpected word choice? I believe that’s what they call “fresh writing”, no?

Some of my favorite authors have their own signature words. I’m sure you’ve noticed it, a phrase or just a word that, used several times in each book, assures the reader that she is indeed holding a book by this author.  I know I have my fall back words, words I use so frequently that my crit partner’s patience is sorely tried. How about you writers? Any favorite word or catch phrase that is your signature?  Care to share any phrase used by a favorite author?

Re-Charge Your Creativity

by Cadence Denton

Ever noticed how extremely proliferate, clever, and creative writers have equally creative and stimulating hobbies? Most NY Times best-selling writers boast of exotic pastimes which include fencing, martial arts, playing musical instruments, sketching/painting to name a few. How do they do it all?

Two “Fire” books coming soon to an e-reader near you!

by Cadence Denton

For most writers the road to publication is not a smooth, four-lane highway. A dirt road with lots and lots of potholes would probably be more accurate. In my case, my writing career has been little better than a goat path up a rocky mountainside. However, the most important lesson I’ve learned in six years of actively pursuing the craft is perseverance.

Why Can’t a Woman Write Like a Man?

by Cadence Denton

When I first began kicking around the idea for this blog, I’d just come off a reading binge of best-selling novels by male authors. I began with “The Magicians” and “The Magician King” by Lev Grossman and finished up with a Jim Butcher / Harry Dresden marathon.

What did I learn – besides the fact the above mentioned are kick-ass writers that I would happily give up a finger or toe just to write half as well? I learned that these talented men do a boat load of “telling”. They use dialog to lecture, they shamelessly insert page after page of backstory, and then “tell” the characters’ emotional responses to said lecture and backstory. I recognized what they were doing and, at first, tssked at their blatant “rule” breaking, then I became curious as to why their “telling” did not overly distract or take me out of the story. Their “telling” well…it worked.
