My crit partner called me the other day with a premise for a new story. It begins with her homeless heroine entering a rundown inner city business to escape a pair of thugs/gangbangers. Instead of being chased back out by the crusty shop keep,
she’s offered a job on the spot after old crusty gets a gander at her Aunt Fanny’s antique bracelet circling her grimy wrist.

2011 is a year of firsts for me: First time I’ve had to put a pet on Prozac (Fabio has issues), first time I’ve coordinated a runway fashion show for the day job, first time I’ve entered the Golden Heart contest, and first time I’ve ever volunteered to judge a contest. I don’t know about you all, but I’m a little bummed, somewhat out of sorts, maybe even a teensy bit sad to see October end. I’ve probably mentioned that Halloween is my favorite holiday. Ushering in the season’s orange, red, and gold autumnal beauty; sumptuous colors that paint the landscape with wide brush strokes, I don’t believe even spring’s blooms can crown fall’s vibrant richness.

I’m in the middle of editing my latest manuscript – a nightmare chore as any writer will attest – and find myself 120k words deep in what’s supposed to be a 100k word manuscript. Yikes! I MUST cut the fat, must put my story on a crash diet and purge some words, but what do I do instead?
